FLUID IMAGINARY

THESIS PDF

With this project, I want to create a space for reorientation. A space that is inspired by the transformational essence of water, and my liberating experience in the ocean.

This is a soundscape guiding you to get disorientated, so take the time to dive in, and escape. Be curious which direction it takes you. In my practice I give the opportunity to get lost and disorientated, I hope to create an intimate space that feels safe enough to allow you to disorientate.

In this environment I want to highlight fluidity, by mimicking the neutral-zone of the ocean, free of pressure. A queered space, to move freely, a space where up can be down and down can be up. A space that allows for the erasure of the social. I hope that without the social pressure, it guides you towards a way that is shaped by your own intuition. Making you choose your own fluid identity when you decide to float back up and reorientate yourself.
Giving room for these moments of reorientation is important, they allow change to happen on a smaller individual level. These small changes and small moments of self-care cause a ripple effect in the water, creating bigger waves that can crash a toxic system.
But change and care start within  yourself, only by being able to care for yourself, can your care for a community. Using water as my reorientation device I hope to give a moment of relief to people of the queer community, to people that deal with depression or anxiety, to people that feel alienated or lost, to people of colour, people with multiracial backgrounds, and those that might feel estranged from their background due to the sea of whiteness that draws you in… I would like to draw you in the fluid sea, and let them take you to a place of reorientation that provides the freedom to be your own fluid self.

Liquify our ways of being, by embracing your fluid identity.
